There are various ways that we follow for effective communication. The most effective is voice chats for discussing projects. We also perform conference voice chats as required. The most generally used is the normal text chats which gives instant communication and also allow parallel tasking. We manage tasks using project management system and updates and alert via emails. Email also have proven effective for discussing complex projects which requires searching or R&D or clarification from third party before responding.
